Learn how salt and hydration can quickly alleviate POTS symptoms and restore balance.

Introduction:

Hi, I’m Carola, founder of Wellhistic and The Holistic Detox, and someone who has lived through one of the most severe cases of POTS I’ve ever seen. For three months, I was bed-bound, relying on a wheelchair to move, and at my worst, I fainted up to 13 times a day. If you’re dealing with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), you know how debilitating it can be. But through my journey, I’ve learned that some simple, effective remedies can make a world of difference when it feels like your body is betraying you.

One of the easiest and most immediate tools? Salt. That’s right—something as simple as salt can provide quick relief by stabilizing blood pressure, helping you stay upright when the world starts spinning.

Why Salt Works for POTS:

People with POTS often experience low blood volume and blood pooling, which cause many of the symptoms—like dizziness, fatigue, and fainting. Salt helps the body retain fluid, increasing blood volume, which in turn boosts blood pressure and improves circulation.

For someone like me, who was fainting multiple times a day, increasing my salt intake became one of the foundational strategies to manage my symptoms and slowly regain my strength.

Quick Fix: Salt for Stabilizing Blood Pressure

When you feel lightheaded or faint, drinking a glass of water with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt can quickly help stabilize your blood pressure. You can also carry small salt packets with you, just in case an episode hits when you’re out.

How to Use Salt for POTS Relief:

  • Saltwater Sip: Mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt into a glass of water and sip slowly when you feel your symptoms coming on. It’s a quick way to raise blood pressure and restore circulation.
  • On-the-Go Salt: Always carry salt packets with you. If you’re out and start feeling those familiar symptoms, sprinkle some salt into your water or take a pinch directly.

Interesting Fact:

For pregnant women with low blood pressure or those unable to take medication, a sip of saltwater can be a simple, safe way to boost blood pressure quickly. Just make sure to follow it with proper hydration to stay balanced.

Other Quick Fixes for POTS:

While salt is a great emergency fix, here are some other quick remedies that can provide relief:

  • Electrolyte Drinks: Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium are essential for balancing fluids and preventing dehydration. Electrolyte-rich drinks can help you stay hydrated and prevent dizziness, especially on hot days or after exercise.
  • Compression Socks: Wearing compression garments—like socks or tights—can improve circulation and reduce blood pooling, which is a major issue for people with POTS.
  • Cold Water Splash or Iced Drinks: Having an iced drink or splashing cold water on your face can stimulate the vagus nerve, helping regulate your heart rate and blood pressure during an episode.

Long-Term Management – Adaptogens for POTS Relief:

While salt is a quick fix, long-term management is crucial for those dealing with POTS. Personally, I found great success with adaptogens, which support adrenal function, regulate cortisol levels, and improve overall endurance and stress response.

The adaptogens in my BOOST supplement can provide lasting support for managing blood pressure, fatigue, and cortisol balance. Here’s a look at some of the powerhouse ingredients in BOOST:

  1. Astragalus: Boosts energy, strengthens the immune system, and supports overall vitality.
  2. Rhodiola: Reduces fatigue, supports endurance, and helps regulate heart rate.
  3. Panax Ginseng (4% Ginsenosides): Improves mental clarity, energy, and stress resilience.
  4. American Ginseng: Helps improve stamina, supports immune health, and regulates blood sugar levels.
  5. Shatavari: Known for balancing hormones and promoting energy in both men and women.
  6. Eleuthero: Increases stamina and helps improve circulation.
  7. Maca (Organic 4:1): Boosts energy levels, improves mood, and supports hormone balance.
  8. Schizandra (500 mg): Supports adrenal function, enhances focus, and protects against stress.
  9. Licorice Root: Helps balance cortisol levels and supports adrenal function.

Conclusion:

Salt is more than just a kitchen staple—it can be a lifesaver for POTS patients. Whether you’re sipping saltwater or adding it to your meals, increasing your sodium intake can provide quick relief from the dizziness and fatigue that often come with POTS. Pair this with other quick fixes like electrolyte drinks and compression socks, and you’ll have an essential toolkit for managing your symptoms day-to-day.

For long-term relief, balancing your cortisol levels and supporting your adrenal function is essential. BOOST, with its unique blend of adaptogens, can be a game-changer for managing the stress, fatigue, and blood pressure fluctuations that accompany POTS. By combining immediate remedies with sustained, natural support, you can regain control over your life and start feeling like yourself again.
