Hi, I’m Carola, founder of Wellhistic and The Holistic Detox, and also a proud POTS warrior. I’ve lived through one of the most severe cases of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) imaginable—fainting up to 13 times a day, needing a wheelchair just to move, and even making up stories about “knee surgery” when people questioned why I always requested a wheelchair at the airport. If you’ve been in that place, you know the struggle is real. But here’s the good news: balancing key vitamins and minerals can be life-changing when it comes to managing POTS symptoms. Today, I want to share how the right nutrient balance, stress management, and even a good parasite cleanse can make all the difference.
POTS is a form of dysautonomia, a condition affecting the autonomic nervous system. This means the body has trouble regulating blood flow, often causing symptoms like lightheadedness, fainting, and a rapid heart rate when standing. While POTS is complex and has various triggers, nutrient deficiencies—especially iron—are a significant factor in worsening symptoms.
One of the most common deficiencies in POTS patients is low iron storage. Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Without enough iron, blood circulation suffers, leading to the classic symptoms of POTS—fatigue, dizziness, and weakness.
In a study at Texas Children’s Hospital, 50% of POTS patients were found to have low iron storage, with 25% of teenage girls and 16% of teenage boys being iron-deficient. This iron deficiency may be contributing to the orthostatic intolerance seen in POTS patients.
Parasites, which I’ve often seen in my clients, can also rob your body of iron, exacerbating these deficiencies. That’s why addressing iron deficiency is so crucial if you’re managing POTS.
